Building Creative Futures for Autistic and Neurodivergent Young Adults
Through hands-on technology, digital fabrication, and real-world projects, participants develop skills, confidence, and pathways toward greater independence.
Our Purpose
The Skyler M. Murphy Creative Futures Foundation, operating as Skyler’s Workshop, was established to expand opportunities for autistic and neurodivergent young adults who may not thrive in traditional educational or employment environments. We believe every individual deserves the opportunity to discover their strengths, develop their talents, and contribute meaningfully to their community.
Skyler’s Workshop provides an inclusive makerspace where participants have access to creative technologies, digital fabrication tools, mentorship, and real-world project experiences. From concept and design to production and potential commercialization, participants engage in hands-on learning that fosters creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, and personal growth.
Through our earn-as-you-learn approach, participants develop practical workforce skills while gaining confidence, experience, and a sense of accomplishment. By creating opportunities to learn, create, and contribute, we help participants explore pathways toward greater independence, community engagement, and meaningful employment.
Our mission is to build brighter, more inclusive futures where neurodivergent individuals are recognized for their abilities, valued for their contributions, and empowered to succeed on their own terms.
Our Story
Skyler’s Workshop was inspired by our son, Skyler Murphy, whose life reflected both the potential and the challenges faced by many autistic and neurodivergent young adults.
Diagnosed with autism at 18 months old, Skyler received support and intervention throughout his life. Over the years, he overcame many challenges and embraced life with enthusiasm and determination. He developed a love for swimming, bicycling, sailing, skateboarding, and sports, but perhaps his greatest achievement was building meaningful friendships and becoming an active member of his community. While these accomplishments may seem ordinary to some, they represent significant milestones for many individuals with autism.
After graduating high school in 2020, Skyler participated in his local school district’s Adult Transition Program. While he was able to find paid employment, our family recognized a challenge that many neurodivergent young adults continue to face: limited opportunities to develop marketable skills, engage in meaningful work, and build greater independence through creative, hands-on experiences.
Skyler was most engaged when he could create, build, and contribute. Together, our family explored projects that matched his strengths, including making custom mugs, apparel, banners, and sewn products such as car flags for local organizations. Through these activities, Skyler developed practical skills, confidence, and a strong sense of pride in producing work that others valued. It became clear that he was capable of far more than the opportunities available to him. What he needed was a structured environment where creativity could be transformed into meaningful, skill-based work.
As we explored ways to expand these efforts—including investing in technologies such as 3D printing, laser engraving, and digital fabrication—we began envisioning a program that could provide similar opportunities for others. We wanted to create a place where neurodivergent young adults could learn new skills, earn income, contribute to real projects, and discover pathways toward greater independence.
Following Skyler’s passing, that vision took on an even deeper meaning.
Rather than allowing his dreams and accomplishments to end with him, we committed ourselves to carrying his vision forward. Skyler showed us what was possible when individuals are given the opportunity to build on their strengths. His experience also revealed what is still missing for many neurodivergent young adults seeking meaningful opportunities after leaving school.
Today, Skyler’s Workshop exists to fill that gap. Through a structured, supportive makerspace environment, participants have access to creative technologies, mentorship, real-world projects, and earn-as-you-learn opportunities. They can develop practical skills, build confidence, contribute meaningfully, and explore pathways toward employment and greater independence.
Skyler’s legacy lives on through every participant who discovers their abilities, creates something meaningful, earns recognition for their work, and gains the opportunity to build a brighter future.
